Deeply saddened we confirm that Fortissimo's company founder and co-chairman Wouter Barendrecht suddenly died on Sunday April 5 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Wouter's passing has shocked his family, his friends and colleagues around the globe.
His passion for cinema, his vision, his energy and his witty humor will be extremely missed by all of us.

On Wednesday May 13, during the Filmfestival in Cannes we will celebrate Wouter's life and achievements. For more information about the event, please contact info@fortissimo.nl. Please respect the nature of the event.

To honour Wouter's memory, a foundation has been established. The goal of the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation will be to support one of Wouter's key missions and goals during his career and that was to encourage the work of talented young filmmakers. This will be accomplished with award grants to be given out on a yearly basis at festivals that Wouter supported and/or worked at or with during his life.
While Wouter loved flowers, we would ask that if you want to honour him, a contribution to the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation would be more appreciated and long lasting.

Wouter was the sweetest guy in show business. He was successful at mixing business and friendship because of his fundamental honesty, artistic integrity and emotional accessibility. Dynamic, kind, generous, committed, smart, loyal, attractive & fun – there just aren’t enough positive adjectives to do him justice. He was loved and respected – attributes hard to come by in the movie industry – by his friends and associates all around the world. It is of course with much sadness and surprise that I learned about Wouter's departure. We spend nice moments together at the recent Filmart in Hong Kong where we had drinks, laughs and nice discussions together about so many subjects. I will always remember Wouter's dedication to his films and directors, his love from cinema in general and life in particular. it is hard to think the man i laughed and chatted with on so many topics 10 days ago is now gone forever from the real life. I nonetheless know he will stay forever in my mind as a great, funny, interesting and hyper active man. I do not know where he is now but i am sure he will be surrounded by people like him and I know those people will be happy to have met a new friend.

Filmfest München mourns the passing of jury member Wouter Barendrecht. The Dutch born producer and chairman of the board of Fortissimo Films died suddenly at the age of 43 on April 5th in Bangkok. “News that shocked us all”, said Festival Director Andreas Ströhl. “Wouter Barendrecht was an exceptional person. International auteur cinema has lost one of its most important supporters." Barendrecht had just agreed to head the jury of this year’s Arri-Zeiss Award at the 2009 Filmfest München.
