Wouter... last Nov. I found a polaroid I took of you in Jerusalem in 1991 in the pool in the hotel... coming out of the water, so young, refrshed... alive! And thats how I shall remember you. I'm sorry I never scanned it and sent it to you... as all here, I'm saddened, shocked and grateful for your presence! xUn abbraccio -- Amos

Oh Wouter! Thank you for your presence... here, there, everywhere!!

friends at IFTA
IFTA members and staff express their sorrow over Wouter's untimely passing. We held him out as a model of what it means to be an "independent" and we counted on him as a friend. We will all miss his good humor and good sense, and will remember him with smiles. We extend our sympathy to Wouter's family and to the Fortissimo team.

Wouter was the sweetest guy in show business. He was successful at mixing business and friendship because of his fundamental honesty, artistic integrity and emotional accessibility. Dynamic, kind, generous, committed, smart, loyal, attractive & fun – there just aren’t enough positive adjectives to do him justice. He was loved and respected – attributes hard to come by in the movie industry – by his friends and associates all around the world. It seems as if we have known him forever and yet still so shocking to think of life and work without him. I send my best wishes to his closest friends and partners in this time of terrible grief, and to Wouter go my fondest thoughts for his meeting with the angels. XOX - Kay

Dear Wouter,we lost touch over the years but the more happy and glad I was to see you last fall in Pyongyang at the Filmfestival. We did share some truly remarkable days there, shut away from the hectic crazyness of modern worlds life and telecommunication of any kind. I will keep the memory of these days forever and ever in my heart… It is an honor to have you known as a friend! Farewell, yours Daniel

Mirjam Wertheim
Wouter, I can't believe you are not with us anymore. It will be so strange not to see you at markets anymore. Ik mis je, Wouter! Liefs, Mirjam

Ongelooflijk, dit bericht. Wouter, met zijn ontoombare energie, kracht en opgewektheid. Een insprirerend mens. Met bewondering. En met warme herinneringen aan de tijd bij Fortissimo.

It is of course with much sadness and surprise that I learned about Wouter's departure. We spend nice moments together at the recent Filmart in Hong Kong where we had drinks, laughs and nice discussions together about so many subjects. I will always remember Wouter's dedication to his films and directors, his love from cinema in general and life in particular. it is hard to think the man i laughed and chatted with on so many topics 10 days ago is now gone forever from the real life. I nonetheless know he will stay forever in my mind as a great, funny, interesting and hyper active man. I do not know where he is now but i am sure he will be surrounded by people like him and I know those people will be happy to have met a new friend.

Dear Wouter - you will be truly missed, a huge hole has opened within the industry and amongst your friends. But you have left us with so many good memories and your legacy of bringing many films and film makers to the world stage. Farewell.

Filmfest München mourns the passing of jury member Wouter Barendrecht. The Dutch born producer and chairman of the board of Fortissimo Films died suddenly at the age of 43 on April 5th in Bangkok. “News that shocked us all”, said Festival Director Andreas Ströhl. “Wouter Barendrecht was an exceptional person. International auteur cinema has lost one of its most important supporters." Barendrecht had just agreed to head the jury of this year’s Arri-Zeiss Award at the 2009 Filmfest München.

To Wouter's friends and family, Our paths crossed in so many ways. Before Fortissimo, when we had time, in Rotterdam for a drink or, at the Chicago FF, for a boat ride ... After Fortissimo, as a busy young man expanding energy and enthousiasm around you. Too young to go, Wouter, but unforgettable forever.

Emile Sherman
So very saddened by this tragic loss - a loss that will leave the international filmmaking community without one its dearest and most loved stars. Wouter has been an amazing supporter of my films over a number of years, and my heart goes out to his family and to Michael, Nelleke, Nicole and the Fortissimo team.

Dimitri Eipides
Some words are pointless. How can there be any meaning to the sudden loss of an old friend. It is the time of the year I would be getting your usual mail. Have a good trip, dear friend....

Miriam Zagiel
My heart goes out to Michael and everyone at Fortissimo and to Wouter's other family Your magic smile my dear will stay with me forever

Helga Stephenson
Through the magic of his personality and the force of his intellect, Wouter made a place in the sun for many filmmakers. He had a brilliant eye for talent which he nurtured with a wonderful mixture of smarts, kindness and sharp wit. A gentleman to the end, he will be greatly missed by his friends around the world.
